This particular version of Pet Sounds is fabulous. I guess folks are getting hip to it, as the prices are steadily climbing.

I still haven't played the Carl & the Passions disc.

Don't forget to set your receiver to mono when listening to Pet Sounds. This is my first mono pressing and thought something was wrong at first when the music had some odd shifting between channels...yup. Sounds great now.

$793 CAN??? What happened to the copies I saw for $20 - $40? What happened to the copies I see on Ebay for that price? What happened to the copies I find in record stores for that price? Embarrassing... did these sellers find out that some audiophile want this specific Pet Sounds? This is not hard to find at all, but of course scalpers and online sellers will make anything seem like so.

"Sticky Fingers", "Who's Next", "Led Zeppelin IV". The definitive classic rock albums of all time. How do the Beach Boys answer? By releasing a classic rock "sounding" album of their own after those 3 landmark albums. And not only doesit fail in comparison to those 3 albums, "Carl & The Passions" fails in comparison to the Beach Boys albums that came before it, and just fails period.

Hands down the worst beach boys album i own on CD. While looking at all the albums that came before this, you'll see that some are better than others. The difference here is that the quality is way too drastic. Especially coming out 2 years after "Sunflower" (considered one of the group's best) and a year after "Surf's Up". As i said, this is a classic rock "sounding" album. The Beach Boys arent the "stereotype" classic rock band despite being active in the same era. The only song on here that sounds like a Beach Boys song (and the only good song on the album) is "All This Is That". Everything else is completely forgetable. "Marcella" is catchy and the biggest hit on the album, but i'd only give it recognition out of pitty for the album not having any other noteworthy material.

The only plus about this album is that in it's original vinyl release, "Carl & The Passions" was paired with "Pet Sounds" as a double album. For someone who didn't own "Pet Sounds" in 1972, that would have been an excellent treat and worth the price alone. The only thing the "Carl & The Passions" vinyl would have been good for was a snack plate/tray. Too bad they dont pair these 2 albums together on a 2 CD package, you'd get a nice Beach Boys coaster for your drinks.

Speaking of the classic rock comparison, I could have sworn i've heard "Here She Comes" and "Hold On Dear Brother" on my local classic rock radio station before. Of course, the DJ didnt say the songs were by the Beach Boys. Why would they (because of the surfing stereotype of course)?

"Carl & The Passions" is an average "Joe Shmoe" classic rock album. Any other rock band in this time period could have released this. If you cant get enough of "Stairway To Heaven" or "Freebird", this album is right up your ally.

Important note: there'a later pressing of the "Carl & the Passions : So Tough / Pet Sounds" two-fer that wasn't mastered by Artisan.

Deadwax inscriptions are different : Pet Sounds' Side 1 has "2MS-2083 (11452) WW1 REC #1 Side 1" (handwritten). It doesn't carry Artisan's "A" like symbol but a triangle with a line.

"Carl & The Passions : So Tough" (side one) has "2MS-32083 (31454) REC 2 WW1" (andwritten as well). No triangle symbol on this one, but no Artisan symbol either.

This is THE pressing of "Pet Sounds" to get. It has never sounded better on wax than this.
