Official Release #6

Early issues in US (& some countries) have a band name & book sticker on cover. Early US issues and some later ones were auto-coupled. Early sleeves/labels show the A3 title as "400 Days Of The Year" where later versions show "9 Types Of Industrial Pollution". On the 1st CD issues extra tracks were also added as FZ progressed his concept for Frank Zappa - Uncle Meat (The Mothers Of Invention Movie).

The title of this album also relates to 'uncle meat', a nickname bestowed upon Sandy Hurvitz by the band when she worked with them at The Garrick, above the Cafe Au Go Go, in New York. She also effected the introduction of Zappa to sleeve artist Cal Schenkel.

Zappa states on this release:
"The words to the songs on this album were scientifically prepared from a random series of syllables, dreams, neuroses & private jokes that nobody except members of the band ever laugh at, and other irrelevant material. They are all 'very serious' & loaded with secret underground candy-rock psychedelic profundities. (Basically, this is an instrumental album.)"

"The music on this album was recorded over a period of about 5 months, from October 1967 to February 1968. Things that sound like a full orchestra were carefully assembled, track by track, through a procedure known as overdubbing.

The weird middle section of "Dog Breath" (after the line, "Ready to attack") has forty tracks built into it. Things that sound like trumpets are actually clarinets played through an electric device made by 'Maestro' with a setting labeled 'Oboe D'Amore' and sped up a minor third with a 'V.S.O.' [variable speed oscillator]. Other peculiar sounds were made on a 'Kalamazoo' electric organ.

The only equipment at our disposal for the modification of these primary sounds was a pair of 'Pultec Filters', two 'Lang Equalizers', and three 'Melchor Compressors' built into the board at Apostolic Studios in New York. The board itself is exceptionally quiet and efficient (the only thing that allowed us to pile up so many tracks) and is the product of Mr. Lou Lindauer's imagination & workmanship.

The material was recorded on a prototype 'Scully 12-track' machine at 30ips. The whole project was engineered by Richard Kunc, or Dynamite Dick, as he is known in the trade. Special engineering credits go to Jerry Hansen for the percussion effects added later at Sunset Sound in L.A., and to our friend 'Mike' in Copenhagen for the tapes he sent us."

Picked up a copy of this in a Canadian jacket..? Has these blue labels and very similar run-outs.
I'm assuming someone just replaced the sleeve/cover because a blue labeled Canadian pressing doesn't seem to exist. Anyone know what's up?

Is this pressing auto-coupled? I purchased a copy of this record and the runout matches up along with the label but my pressing is auto-coupled and this page doesn't specify if it should be or not.

This was a two LP version when it first came out but it was all put onto two regular length CD's: but there is only one standout actual music track and thats 'King Kong' coming in at 16:30 approximately total running time -and its in a bunch of parts like separate entities one after the other. Its a real burn from a musical point of view as if Frank Zappa was trying to berate people via the album-for buying the album. There are a whole bunch of Zappa "skits" (like small plays) strung together on the first three sides and the whole affair gets really old after about ten minutes of listening to two people repeating the phrase 'using a chicken to measure it' over and over again as if a conversation could be comprised of a series of meaningless questions and equally meaningless answers. Kind of a bummer I thought-maybe funny at first-but not after 30 minutes of it. This FZ communiqué from the often directionless counterculture he was part of won him a lot of strange people as fans but it also didn't win him many fans among the community of musicians. The guys in his band could play but they seemed to like to goof off more than anything. I think that this is the kind of record a lot of people would take back to where they bought it and ask for either a refund or an exchange when it first emerged. A rip off like that can hardly be said to be mocking blatant commerciality. FZ saw himself as a vanguard of creative genius-as if he represented "a kick in the pants of musical complacency"-but he was often the one being complacent. He did better albums later on-as in he was probably told to "shut up and play yer guitar" (the title of a later FZ work) or be 'set free from the burdens of being a recording artist.' Basically don't bother with this little piece of artsy-fartsy flotsam and jetsam unless you are a masochist. After being in the music business for decades FZ said that he didn't care if he influenced any subsequent generations of musicians. Probably because he had ultimately realized he wasn't really a positive influence.

This Transatlantic issue was the first appearance of "Uncle Meat" in the UK, keeping FZ's followers happy while Pye became struck through and Reprise eventually sealed a UK deal with CBS. It's likely the resultant low budget was the reason this didn't have the booklet found in US issues.

Zappa, ever-lured by new hardware and technicians who knew their chops, put this album together at John Townley's Apostolic Studios in NYC - reverently named after their prized 12-track prototype Scully, hooked to Lou Lindauer's circuitry. Ground-breaking technologies of the time and taken for granted these days.

The music, album title and sleeve art by Schenkel are an inter-connected parody of events in the life and times of the band. Sandy Hurvitz (Essra Mohawk) had worked with the band at The Garrick, where she was endearingly referred to as 'uncle meat'. It was she who had introduced FZ to Schenkel, who subsequently employed objet trouvé from his lair in a dental practice for the photo-montage of monstrous 'pop-star' lips and scientific experiment on the human brain. A vision echoed on "The Ark" sleeve and a 'conceptual continuity' to the androgynous groupies, Uncle Meat, sidekick Bimbo and the dynamic 'dynamo-hum' birth of Ruben & The Jets.

After the Uncle Meat intro Pamela Zarubica, as Suzy Creamcheese on "The Voice Of Cheese", informs us of her status in 'teenage America' and Europe. (She also intros on the "Louie Louie" vignette from the Albert Hall, London, with Preston on the pipe-organ). After 'Suzy's' initial intro comes "400 Days Of The Year" (a line from Bob Guy's B-side "Letter From Jeepers" produced by FZ) - which exists only as a title on early label copies, later becoming "Nine Types Of Industrial Pollution". We then head off into what is, essentially, a series of prank-Zappa instrumentals. These are littered with what FZ describes as, "...private jokes that nobody except members of the band ever laugh at... all very serious and loaded with secret underground candy-rock psychedelic profundities".

This is a deliciously meaty double-woppa, packed with veg, sauce and cheese. Enjoy.
